February 25, 2010

GREEN BAY, WIS.
– In its third straight year of record enrollment, Finger Lakes Community College (FLCC)—one of the fastest growing community colleges in New York State—recognized a growing need to modernize its new Victor, N.Y. campus. That’s why the college selected furniture from KI to update its new 26,000-square-foot high-tech Victor Campus Center. The facility and classrooms needed to create a collaborative, state-of-the-art learning environment for students and faculty, while providing an intimate educational experience in a small, personalized atmosphere. A video detailing the new facility is available at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFqAq9ZHaCE.

“Finger Lakes Community College represents a growing trend among community colleges across the country,” said Amy Kiefer, vice president of education, KI. “Many of these higher educational institutions are experiencing record enrollment, and with that comes a greater need to modernize and update the physical surroundings of the classrooms and learning environments. We’re thrilled with the College’s new facility and very excited to play a role in this transformation.”

Located in the heart of Victor’s thriving tech-based business community, the two-story center serves as the science and technology hub for the college, while also offering traditional programs in liberal arts and business. The curriculum gives students the hands-on skills and expertise required to meet the region’s workforce needs, including local internships and field experiences.

“Today’s students are looking for technology programs that prepare them for the high-tech jobs of tomorrow,” said Bob Matson, director of public affairs and community partnerships, FLCC. “Everything about our new facility, from advanced learning labs to the collaborative learning environments in classrooms, allows us to do this and more. Each of these elements plays a key role in fostering learning and ensuring our students have the job skills they need to succeed in today’s—and tomorrow’s—technology driven workforce.” Matson talks more about the need to modernize at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFqAq9ZHaCE.

Plan Architectural Studio (PLAN Studio), P.C. (Rochester, N.Y.), played an integral role in designing the facility and selecting KI furniture for its classrooms and learning labs. The architectural firm worked closely with college administrators to select furniture that was conducive to the collaborative learning environment the college wanted to create.

“We designed the new Campus Center to reflect the college’s desire to create a high-tech and flexible educational environment to match its cutting-edge programs and curriculum,” said Christopher Lopez, AIA, AICP, Principal, PLAN Studio. “KI’s education furniture and expertise helped us create an environment that fosters learning on all levels.”

The Center features KI furniture throughout the facility, including its Strive® Seating Collection (task chairs, café stools and stack chairs), Instruct® Mobile Lecterns and Athens® Tables. WorkZone® Desking and Grand Salon® Lounge Seating also contribute to the collaborative learning environment of the new facility.
